Who is the Word in John 1?

The Word in John 1 is Jesus Christ. John identifies the Word as the One who existed in the beginning, who was with God, who was God, and who later became flesh and lived among men. The title “Word” emphasizes that Jesus is God’s ultimate revelation of Himself to humanity.

Why Does John Call Jesus “The Word”?

The opening verses of John’s Gospel contain one of the clearest descriptions of Jesus found anywhere in Scripture.

John introduces someone called “the Word” and makes remarkable claims about Him. The Word existed in the beginning, was with God, was God, and created all things. Later in the chapter, John reveals that the Word became flesh and lived among men.

Who is the Word?

The answer is Jesus Christ.

Understanding why John uses this title helps us better understand who Jesus is and why He came into the world.

What Does John 1 Say?

John begins his Gospel with these words:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The same was in the beginning with God.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1-3)

Before identifying the Word, John tells us several things about Him.

The Word existed in the beginning.

The Word was with God.

The Word was God.

The Word created all things.

These statements immediately separate the Word from every created being.

The Word did not come into existence at some point in time. He already existed when the beginning began.

The Word Became Flesh

The identity of the Word becomes unmistakable later in the chapter.

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

This verse removes all doubt.

The Word became flesh.

The Word lived among men.

The Word displayed the glory of the Father.

Only Jesus Christ fits that description.

John is not introducing a separate person from Jesus. He is describing Jesus using a title that emphasizes His role as God’s revelation to mankind.

Why Does John Call Jesus “The Word”?

Words reveal thoughts.

Without words, we would not know what another person is thinking.

In a similar way, Jesus reveals God to humanity.

Later in the chapter, John writes:

“No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.” (John 1:18)

Jesus makes the Father known.

He reveals God’s character.

He reveals God’s truth.

He reveals God’s plan of salvation.

The title “Word” reminds us that Jesus is God’s perfect revelation of Himself.

The Word Was Not Created

Some people believe Jesus was created by God.

John teaches the opposite.

“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:3)

Everything that was made was made through the Word.

If Jesus created all things, then He cannot be part of the group of things that were created.

John places the Word on the Creator side of the Creator-creation distinction.

The Word Was Present at Creation

John’s opening words intentionally point readers back to Genesis.

“In the beginning was the Word…” (John 1:1)

The similarity to Genesis 1:1 is unmistakable.

John wants readers to understand that Jesus was present at creation and actively involved in it.

This truth is explored further in our article, Is Jesus in Genesis 1:1?

The Jesus who walked the roads of Galilee is the same Jesus who existed before the world began.

Paul Confirms the Same Truth

The apostle Paul teaches the same thing.

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible… all things were created by him, and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)

Paul identifies Jesus as the Creator.

All things were created by Him.

All things were created for Him.

The testimony of Scripture is consistent.

What Does This Teach Us About Jesus?

John’s description of the Word teaches several important truths.

Jesus existed before His birth.

Jesus is God.

Jesus created all things.

Jesus reveals the Father.

Jesus became flesh and lived among men.

These truths help answer the question, Who Is Jesus?

They also help explain why many Christians believe Jesus claimed equality with God. For a deeper study, see Did Jesus Claim to Be God?

Why This Matters

The identity of the Word is not merely a theological detail.

If Jesus is the eternal Word who created all things, then He is worthy of our trust, worship, and obedience.

The One who died on the cross for sinners was not merely a good teacher.

He was the eternal Son of God who entered His own creation to save those who believe in Him.

Conclusion

The Word in John 1 is Jesus Christ.

John tells us that the Word existed in the beginning, was with God, was God, and created all things.

He then identifies the Word as the One who became flesh and dwelt among us.

Jesus did not begin at Bethlehem. He existed before creation itself.

The eternal Word became a man so that mankind could know God and receive eternal life through Him.
